Italian Painter (1884-1920)
During the short life of the young artist of fey attitude he produced works of great beauty, particularly his portraits.
The elongated faces gave them an intense and compelling elegance. Greatly influenced by African art and the sculptures of the Rumanian Constantin Brancusi due to their primitive naivety he encapsulated the mannered style he loved and made his own. Setting his figures against a plain background gave them individuality and provided no distraction from the subject.
His other influences were cubism and Picasso but was not associated with any particular movement. He is now better known for his elongated nudes. He died in Paris of drink and drugs.
